I’ve written often about a special place very near and dear to my heart, Folly Beach, located on the Atlantic Ocean about 10 miles from where I live. It’s a diverse and eclectic hodgepodge of people, architecture and businesses, all bound up in common hopes and dreams of finding that close-to perfect beach sanctuary “away from it all.” The town’s motto is, Folly Beach: The Edge of America.”
Charleston is a beautiful old southern city and your photos of the old homes and gardens are very good. It is a city that has prospered over many years and much of it's original wealth was based on the slave trade. The time of slavery was a dark period in our history and it's a time we can all look back on with regret. We have tried to set things right over the last 150 years and that is a good thing, however, I put it to you that slavery is still alive in our modern world. It's not the slavery of chains and irons, but it's economic slavery. Throughout the world and especially in the richest country on earth we have a working poor who work day in and day out and never get ahead. Most work their entire life and never achieve anything. They are captured by our current social structures. Like old Charleston, our prosperity comes from off the backs of the working poor. Slavery is still alive and well in our modern world.
