I often think about how technology has affected my life in the past three decades since I first went online with the World Wide Web at the library on a fateful day in late 1995.
This essay covers a fascinating topic John. AI has certainly become an intriguing companion in the search for knowledge. It's a binary computer process that searches and assembles data from databases around the world and then presents this information to us in a way we can understand. I believe one day when quantum computing is developed further and computing is no longer a simple binary process but a multidemensional process we will see AI merge with AC (artificial consciousness). At that point we may in fact be able to develop robots that not only have intelligence but also seem to have consciousness. At some point in the future humans may have to redefine consciousness. I wonder if we will be ready for this kind of future.
Thank you, Eddie. There is so much to think about in this insightful comment. You are very knowledgeable about this subject of AI and LLMs such as ChatGPT. I will email more about this soon.
I enjoyed this piece, especially your chat with AI. Can AI ever be a true friend? At this point, I say no. As for the future, who knows? One thing is for sure, you don't have to worry about what AI is saying about you behind your back - or do you, based on the data on you that the web has gathered and is releasing to others among the human species?
Thanks, Ralph. First the Web, back ages ago now, and presently the enormous, and simultaneously exhilarating and frightening, advances in AI. It’s all happening so fast. I will send you a Word doc with that deeper dive with ChatGPT that I mentioned in this essay. But even that is merely a drop in the bucket, a still-primitive beginning to what a real back and forth would be like. That is my next project, to see where it leads.
you write of technology I never heard of like ChatCRPT etc I have Apple, IPad, IPhone. If I have trouble with these, I ask my grandson. I only do basics like Word, mail, message, FB and phone. am wary of pop
ups and apts that may be scams. With AI how does one determine fact from fiction? Truth from fact? AI can change photos misidentify.,
and people’s heads, identity and words
etc. AI can make an
architecture plan faster than a real architect. I lovely to read so wil stick to books. Easier to understand. Also, modern technology has caused problems for children, teens, older.
Yes, modern technology is impressive, but I prefer the way it was.
Thank you for your comment, Jeanne. While I miss many things about the olden days, there is no going back for me. I love my nostalgia, but those days before the Internet are just memories now. YouTube and ChatGPT are very habit-forming, but I love learning so much and being entertained and amused by so many intelligent and talented people. I love it. So different from the days when we had only three TV networks.
